What is an ADHD assessment?

An ADHD assessment is a careful look at how you think, focus, feel and get things done, now and when you were growing up. A specialist clinician brings together information from several sources to decide whether ADHD is the best explanation for your experiences.

There is no single test for ADHD. That's why a good assessment uses more than one kind of evidence: what you tell us, what people who know you tell us, and objective measures of attention and activity.

Assessments in line with NICE guidelines

NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) publishes the national guideline for ADHD in England, called NG87. It sets out how ADHD should be diagnosed. Following it means your assessment:

  • is carried out by a specialist clinician with training and experience in diagnosing ADHD
  • is a full clinical and psychosocial assessment: not just a checklist
  • looks at your developmental history, including your childhood
  • checks whether your symptoms meet recognised diagnostic criteria (DSM-5 or ICD-11)
  • considers whether symptoms cause a real impact on your life, in more than one setting such as home, work or education
  • looks for other conditions that often happen alongside ADHD, or could explain your symptoms
