The assessment process

Exactly what happens, from booking to your results.

Step by step

How the assessment works

Here's exactly what happens, from booking to your results.

  1. About 5 minutes

    Book and pay online

Choose online or in person, pick a date and time for your clinical interview, and pay securely. You'll get a confirmation email and a calendar invitation straight away.

  2. Online, in your own time

    Questionnaires

There are 7 questionnaires. Your confirmation email has a link to fill in 6 of them online. They ask about your attention and activity now, what you were like as a child, daily life, mood, worry and how you notice things.

    • One question at a time, with big, clear answer buttons.
    • Do them in any order, and take breaks. Your progress is saved as you go.
    • About 30 to 40 minutes altogether. There are no right or wrong answers.
    • Not finished by your appointment? That's fine. We'll complete them with you on the day.

The 7th is for someone who knew you as a child, ideally a parent. If that isn't possible, a partner, brother or sister, or close friend is fine. Just add their name and email on your questionnaire page and we'll email it to them. Please try to get this one done before your appointment, as we can't complete it with you on the day.

Old school reports are really helpful too, if you have them. Don't worry if you don't.

  3. 15 to 20 minutes

    QbCheck: a computer-based test

QbCheck is a short computer test. Where you do it depends on how you've booked:

    • In person: you do it at our clinic on the day of your appointment, on our equipment. Nothing to set up or prepare.
    • Online: you do it at home before your appointment. We'll email you a link with simple instructions. You'll need a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam and somewhere quiet where you won't be interrupted.

You'll see shapes appear on screen and press a key when you see the target shape.

While you do this, a camera tracks small movements of your head. The test measures three things linked to ADHD: attention, activity (how much you move) and impulsivity. Your results are compared with people of the same age and sex, both with and without ADHD.

QbCheck is a clinically validated medical device, cleared for use in the UK, Europe and the USA. It gives your clinician objective information, but it does not diagnose ADHD on its own. It's one piece of the picture.

  4. Online or in Hull

    Clinical interview

This is the main part of your assessment: an in-depth conversation with a specialist clinician. It's relaxed and there are no trick questions. You can take breaks, move around or fidget as much as you need.

    The clinician will ask about:

    • your current difficulties and strengths
    • your childhood, school and family history
    • how things affect your work, studies, relationships and daily life
    • your physical and mental health, sleep, and any medication

They will go through your questionnaires and QbCheck results with you too.

  5. After your interview

    Your outcome and report

The clinician will explain whether you meet the criteria for ADHD, in plain language. You'll receive a written report setting out what was assessed, the outcome and recommendations for next steps.

With your permission, we can also share a summary with your GP.

  6. Your choice

    Next steps

Whatever the outcome, you'll leave with a clearer understanding of yourself. Next steps might include talking to your GP about treatment, ADHD coaching, workplace or study adjustments, or support for something else we've identified.

How to prepare

  • Start your online questionnaires when you can. They help us make the most of your interview time, but don't worry if you can't finish them all.
  • Ask someone who knew you as a child, ideally a parent, if they can fill in questionnaire 7. Add their details on your questionnaire page and we'll email it to them.
  • Dig out any old school reports, if you can find them.
  • Jot down examples of day-to-day difficulties. It's easy to forget them on the day.
  • Have a list of any medication you take.

Feeling nervous? That's completely normal. There's no way to "fail" an assessment. Our job is to understand you, and you're welcome to bring notes, fidget, move or take breaks.
