Children and families

Support for parents, carers and schools, based on NICE guidance.

What NICE recommends

  • Under-5s: NICE recommends an ADHD-focused group parent-training programme as the first treatment. Medication isn't usually offered at this age without a second specialist opinion.
  • Children aged 5 and over: ADHD-focused information and support for parents and carers, plus changes at home and school. Parent training is also recommended where a child has ADHD and oppositional or conduct difficulties.
  • School: with permission, schools should be told about the diagnosis so they can put adjustments and support in place.

Parent training isn't a sign of "bad parenting". It gives families practical tools that research shows really help.
